We are thrilled to present “Chick Flicks: Celebrating 50 Years of Sexual Health” at the Broadway
Theatre. The term “chick flicks” has often been used to dismiss films centred on women as less
important or “feminine.” While this label carries a negative, sexist connotation, we’re reclaiming
it. For us, “chick flicks” celebrates the stories of cis and trans women, along with other gender
and sexually diverse individuals, putting them at the forefront.
Historically, women’s representation in film has been devalued, reflecting a broader tendency to
dismiss experiences outside the traditional male gaze. But a film being ‘girly’ or female-centric
doesn’t make it any less meaningful. By reclaiming ‘chick flicks,’ we’re highlighting films geared
toward “girls, gays, and theys,” showing they are just as fun and important.
The films in our program celebrate the strength and resilience of women’s lives, featuring strong
female leads that challenge gender norms and break down stereotypes. These films aren’t just
entertainment; they are cultural texts reflecting diverse experiences, amplifying voices too often
left out of mainstream cinema. As feminist film theory reminds us, representation matters.
Film screenings for our Chick Flicks Fundraiser will run from November to March at Broadway Theatre. We will have updates on times and which films will be screening very soon. We hope to see you there!
