NEW RESOURCES: Syphilis in Saskatchewan

Saskatoon Sexual Health is launching new resources about syphilis and congenital syphilis. If you are a healthcare provider, community-based organization or someone interested in sexual health, these resources will help you develop awareness and understanding about syphilis and it’s resurgence.

For 6 months, Saskatoon Sexual Health engaged in work to increase our understanding of syphilis and capacity for treatment, education and prevention. We also hosted various events and learning opportunities so that our community could learn more about syphilis and its impact on public health. Now, we are launching a syphilis platform on our website for those resources so that the awareness and education we developed can continue.

Syphilis and congenital syphilis (CS) are on the rise! The rate of syphilis across Canada increased by 77% between 2018 and 2023. This resurgence has impacted Saskatchewan in particular. In fact, between that same period (2018-2023), Saskatchewan’s rate of syphilis increased by 1,213%. The province’s rate of syphilis (per 100,000 people) is 5 times the national average. While these statistics are alarming, syphilis is nothing to fear; it is a curable STBBI.
